Smarter Sensors, Smarter Data

The XA Series of air quality monitors combine advanced electrochemical gas sensors with AI-driven digital signal processing. Sampling at 200 times per second and cross-referencing 26 environmental variables, our sensors deliver reference-grade accuracy at a fraction of the cost of chemiluminescence stations — mounted directly onto traffic signal infrastructure with no excavation and no ongoing site visits.

The Air Quality Challenge

Local authorities face growing pressure to monitor and reduce roadside pollution, but traditional approaches are expensive, slow and limited in coverage. Reference stations cost tens of thousands per site. Low-cost sensors drift and need constant recalibration. Neither approach gives you the real-time, junction-level intelligence you need to take action.

The XA Series solves this by combining the accuracy of reference instruments with the cost and deployment speed of low-cost sensors — and adds AI prediction that lets you act before pollution peaks, not after.

AI-Powered Signal Processing

Raw electrochemical sensor readings are inherently noisy. Our AI engine samples at 200 times per second, cross-references temperature, humidity, and 24 other environmental variables, and applies machine-learned calibration models to extract a clean, stable signal.

The result is 5 ppb resolution from a sensor that costs a fraction of a chemiluminescence analyser — with no consumables, no site visits, and a 5-year operational life.

  • Dual sensors for cross-validation and drift detection
  • AI auto-calibration — no manual recalibration needed
  • 200 samples per second digital signal processing
  • 26 environmental variables factored in real-time
  • Matches reference station accuracy at 1/10th the cost

Proven in the Field: Staffordshire Live Labs

In Newcastle-under-Lyme, NOW Wireless deployed XA sensors as part of the Staffordshire Live Labs project with Staffordshire County Council, Amey, Keele University and the Connected Places Catapult.

The system used AI to predict pollution an hour ahead and implemented special traffic gating plans via the TMS system. The result: NO₂ spikes outside a care home on the inner ring road were flattened, while journey times for drivers were maintained.

  • AI prediction triggered proactive traffic gating
  • NO₂ spikes flattened at the target care home
  • Journey times maintained for drivers
  • Integration with Swarco TMS system
